Collection: Military Intelligence Files: Land, Sea & Air, 1938–1974 Volumes British Commanders'-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany (BRIXMIS): military intelligence, 1949-1974
The British Commanders'-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany (BRIXMIS) was a liaison initiative established in 1946. Although ostensibly a diplomatic endeavour, BRIXMIS presented an ideal opportunity for intelligence gathering behind the Iron Curtain, and was exploited as such. This volume includes dispatches and reports on the Soviet military. Many contain information on the movements of the Red Army and activity on and around air bases, with detailed analyses of aircraft and weaponry. Personnel files, some of which deal with defectors to and from Warsaw Pact nations, are also enclosed.

Whilst we try our best to extract as much usable and searchable as possible, our primary resource collections have varying levels of available metadata and searchable OCR'd text depending on the nature of the document; please bear this in mind when searching, especially when looking for older resources. We recommend trying the following:
- Try a different combination of terms and queries to try and match your result.
- Use 'themes' or 'subjects' directly in your search query, e.g. "19th century colonial administration Africa" - 'Africa' being the broad subject.
- Try using the advanced search facility.
