Collection: Colonial Law in Africa, 1808–1919 Volumes Tanzania (Zanzibar), 1892–1919
This volume consists of gazettes published in Zanzibar between the years 1892 and 1919. These gazettes began to be published in 1892 and this process was taken over by the government of Zanzibar in 1894. During the first decade of publication the gazettes included information on Uganda and East Africa more generally. Earlier publications contained import and export statistics, weather reports, and currency exchange rates. From February 1909 the gazettes included notices of officer appointments. 1913 saw the introduction of legal records as the gazettes became more formalised. Significant events covered by the gazettes in this volume include the Makanjira campaign to take part of Malawi from the Yao people and the First Matabele War against the Ndebele people of Zimbabwe in February 1894. Information relating to the Boer War and the Anglo-Egyptian Soudan Convention of 1899 also features.

- Try a different combination of terms and queries to try and match your result.
- Use 'themes' or 'subjects' directly in your search query, e.g. "19th century colonial administration Africa" - 'Africa' being the broad subject.
