Trinidad was colonized by the Spanish in 1532, taken by the British in 1797 and officially ceded to the British under a treaty with Spain in 1802. Enslaved labourers in Trinidad were legally freed in 1834, although subject to terms of apprenticeship until 1838. Indian indentured labourers worked the plantations from the 1840s.
