Collection: Canada in Records from Colonial Missionaries, 1722–1952 Volumes USPG C series records relating to Toronto to c.1860
As the church expanded in Toronto it struggled to find sufficient funds to provide adequate wages for its staff, this shortage of funds is evident in the refusals of requests for funds to dioceses and in correspondence from those who had been underpaid. The splitting of the Quebec diocese into Upper Canada and Lower Canada took a number of years to progress from a principle suggestion to a reality and some potential reasons for this delay are included here. The Imperial Parliament's passing of an Act to permit the sale of clergy reserves certanly had a number of supporters; the detail of this Act was to prove more divisive amongst Reverends who wanted that money for their churches immediately. An assortment of Annual Returns from various dioceses also features here alongside a large selection of papers in relation to Dr John Strachan, the first Bishop of Toronto.
