Collection: Reporting on Africa: From Apartheid to Pan-Africanism, 1949–1995 Volumes South Africa: The Early Years of Apartheid South African Press Digests, 1949-1972
This weekly typed digest summarising all of South Africa's principal newspapers and magazines, seperated by year into documents, was issued by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies throughout the first 24 years of Apartheid. Recurring themes include increases in restrictions placed upon first the non-white, then the general population - Communism being a common charge for which activists were put under house arrest without trial. These digests also focus upon the party politics of the time with frequent updates on how the white-only electoral results are likely to be affected by parties' policies towards the non-white populations. Reports of civil disobedience are also common throughout these documents.
