Papers relating to the 4th Earl's tenure of office as Governor-General of Canada, 1898-1904. These represent his official papers: private correspondence of this period (MSS.12391-7) is not reproduced in this collection. The Earl's primary concerns during this period consisted of reforming the militia into a formalised military force, resolving the Alaskan Boundary dispute alongside other diplomatic issues concerning the United States, and the development of cable and rail networks across Canada.
