Collection: Tanzania and Malawi in Records from Colonial Missionaries, 1857–1965 Volumes Miscellaneous press cuttings, books and conference papers
Many of the printed publications included here are in Swahili in order that the native speakers of the day could understand them. The fact that English translations of items such as the Book of Common Prayer and The New Testament are readily obtained elsewhere, offers opportunities for those who wish to compare how words translated into Swahili in 1893 to how they would translate today and thereby establish how Swahili has changed during this time. Meanwhile, Bishop Weston's observations on the mistreatment of Africans by their German rulers is informative both on account of his descriptions of German actions and regarding which punishments he views as appropriate. The lives of Bishop Mackenzie and his wife Anne are also documented here through press cuttings, as Mallendar's journal reveals the progress of a missionary's journey from his first application form to a confrontation with the crew of a slave dhow. Latter items include a copy of a decree against slavery by the Sultan of Zanzibar and a range of materials relating to the highly controversial Kikuyu Conference regarding who could recieve the Communion.

Whilst we try our best to extract as much usable and searchable as possible, our primary resource collections have varying levels of available metadata and searchable OCR'd text depending on the nature of the document; please bear this in mind when searching, especially when looking for older resources. We recommend trying the following:
- Try a different combination of terms and queries to try and match your result.
- Use 'themes' or 'subjects' directly in your search query, e.g. "19th century colonial administration Africa" - 'Africa' being the broad subject.
- Try using the advanced search facility.
