Melanesia Diocese, 1838-1958
Collection: New Zealand & Polynesian Records from Colonial Missionaries, 1838–1958 Volumes Melanesia Diocese, 1838-1958
C/NZ/MEL. The two boxes of Melanesian files consist almost entirely of the private correspondence of John Coleridge Patteson. Consecrated the first missionary bishop of Melanesia in 1861, he died in 1871 at the hands of the inhabitants of Nukapu in the Solomon Islands, apparently in reprisal for the abduction of fellow islanders by Europeans some months earlier. In addition to a number of printed tracts and some mid-20th century letters from a descendant of Patteson, there is also correspondence by C. Wilson, one of Patteson's successors as Bishop of Melanesia, with H. Montgomery, Bishop of Tasmania and later Secretary of the SPG.

We were unable to find any results for your requested terms. Whilst we try our best to extract as much usable and searchable as possible, our primary resource collections have varying levels of available metadata and searchable OCR'd text depending on the nature of the document; please bear this in mind when searching, especially when looking for older resources. We recommend trying the following:
- Try a different combination of terms and queries to try and match your result.
- Use 'themes' or 'subjects' directly in your search query, e.g. "19th century colonial administration Africa" - 'Africa' being the broad subject.
- Try using the advanced search facility.
- Use a broader search and use the filters on the left-hand side to refine your results.
